These doors have got to be my biggest pet peeve as an investigator. They seemed to come into fashion about 20 years ago and each year their popularity grows. At least in the areas where I do business. Most of them are contorted or maimed in some way, harkening the imagination back to past violence against them. As an investigator your job is to get in the door and on the couch. Preferably being offered cookies that the witness just baked. Heavily meshed screen doors are death to personal interaction. Looking in the windows is usually not an option, as most of the places I go seem to have heavy curtains drawn at all times. Or sheets. Or the windows are heavily barred up too. My technique is to try to see the shadow of how tall the person is, then estimate where their eyes might be and concentrate on looking earnestly at the holes in that area of the security screen. I call it "blind eye contact." The person on the other side probably sees it as blonde eye contact. Seems to get me in the door most days. But I still hate those damn doors.
